Trains are best used when getting to the areas along the seaside of Galle Road - Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya, Wellawatte, Dehiwala and Mount Lavinia. The Kelani Valley train line can also be used to get to outlying suburbs such as Narahenpita (via Cotta Road Station) from Fort.
Time tables are clearly marked at the stations. Always double check the train stops or you may end up outside of Colombo! Train fares are fixed and are usually marginally lower than bus fares.
You could also use trains if you are travelling towards hill country. The journey promises you magnificent views of mountains, tea estates and waterfalls.
