Kelaniya, situated 7 km away from the Colombo city is where the Kelaniya temple stands. Kelaniya temple, popularly known as the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, is built on the banks of the Kelani River. This Vihara is believed to be hallowed, eight years after the enlightenment of Lord Buddha when he visited Sri Lanka for the third and last time. The original Vihara is believed to be built in the 5th century. It is famous for its images and paintings that talks about various important events that took place in Buddha’s life and in Sri Lankan Buddhism.
