sapumal foundation

The Sapumal Foundation was set up in 1974 by the late Harry Pieris to preserve the art of Sri Lanka. The gallery contains over 1,000 items, with at least 200 paintings and drawings tracing the development of Sri Lankan art since the 1920s.

The Foundation occupies the house where the artist Harry Pieris worked. Each room of the house has been transformed into a gallery. Harry Pieris' studio still contains his easel, plate, brushes and a box containing the last few tubes of paint he used.

The art collection includes work by Harry Pieris, Richard Gabriel, Ivan Pieris, Justin Deraniyagala, George Keyt, L.T.P. Manjusri, Geoffrey Beling, George Claessen and Aubrey Collette.

A gallery shop contains works of art for sale. There is also a print studio which offers training in etching, engraving, and other art courses.
