visa & entry requirements

A foreign national is eligible to enter Sri Lanka if they hold a valid passport, a return or onward air ticket, and can show proof of sufficient funds (equivalent to US$30 a day) for the duration of stay.

As of January 1st, 2012, foreign nationals must obtain a visa prior to arrival through the Electronic Travel Authorization System (ETA). A visa is required for those wishing to stay in the country for a short visit; this includes, tourists, business people, and those transiting (the first 48 hours do not have a fee, but a visa is still required).

*Please note: Citizens of the Republic of Singapore and the Republic of Maldives are exempt from this process, as well as children under 12 years of age.

Short Visit visas hold a 30 day validity from the date of arrival, which must be within 3 months from the date of issue of the visa through the ETA.

There are several ways to obtain a visa through the ETA

1. By the applicant
2. By a third party
3. By a registered agent
4. At a Sri Lanka Overseas Mission
5. At the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo
6. On arrival at the port of entry in Sri Lanka

Applicants will need to submit a form electronically and pay the appropriate processing fee in order to obtain the visa. The visa processing fees range from US$10 to US$30 depending on the type of visa – tourist, business, or transit.

Visitors who wish to stay over 30 days, for any purpose, can apply for a 90-day visa at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo and pay the relevant visa fees. It will generally take 2 working days to obtain the extensions, depending on the type of visa applied for. Documents necessary for this extension are: application, copy of the passport photo page, 2 photographs, and the relevant visa fee.

Note:  Once in Sri Lanka, a visa type cannot be changed. The Sri Lankan Government will take action against visitors who overstay their visas.
